TOURNAMENT
The Solheim Cup, first staged in 1990, is the world’s leading women’s golfing event. It is a team match play format contested between Team Europe and Team USA. Taking place biennially, it operates in alternative years to its male counterpart, the Ryder Cup, and alternates its host location between the US and Europe. More info can be found here.
Match play is a format where individual matches are contested between two players or pairs of players. The goal is to win as many matches as possible to accumulate points for your team.
Match play formats in the Solheim Cup:
-
Foursomes: Two-player teams take turns hitting a single ball until the hole is completed
-
Fourballs: Each player on a two-player team plays their own ball
-
Singles: Each player from one team competes against the other team's player in stroke play
-
Match Play scoring is as follows:
-
One point is awarded for each match won
-
Half a point is awarded to matches that end in a tie
-
A total of 14.5 points is required to win the Cup

The inaugural Cup was held in 1990, and the event was staged in even numbered years until 2002, alternating years with the Ryder Cup (the equivalent men's event). As part of the general reshuffling of team golf events after the one-year postponement of the 2001 Ryder Cup following the September 11 attacks, the Solheim Cup switched to odd numbered years beginning in 2003. Another reshuffle of team golf events took place in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Solheim Cup will return to even numbered years from 2024.
Two teams of 12 girls, Team Europe and Team USA, aged between 12-18 years old (born 2008 or later) but not having reached their 18th birthday prior to January 1st, 2026. Participants must be amateurs and must not be members of a competitive collegiate golf program.
The competition is played over two days and consists of 24 matches – six foursome matches, six fourball matches and 12 singles matches. The previous winner of the PING Junior Solheim Cup needs 12 points to retain the cup. The other team needs 12.5 points to win the cup.
The event was founded by PING in 2002 with the aim for the PING Junior Solheim Cup to give participants great golfing opportunities to further their golfing careers and to support the future golf stars.
